I am a self taught artist creating richly detailed, surreal oil paintings.

I was raised in a small religious cult where I was taught too much about good and evil and almost nothing about real life. I have since been trying to pick apart these earliest lessons by observing both myself and the world with intense curiosity.

My paintings, as a result, almost always contain something—an image, an idea, a symbol—that traces back to this lifelong pursuit of “reality,” the same impulse that drives me to perpetually collect new ideas, interesting objects, and diverse topics of research.

To me, the so-called real world is quite a surreal place where I am naively surprised that people lie, things are not quite what they seem, and even hindsight is colored by biases or assumptions. Creating “surreal” art flips this on its head by expressing how I see and, moreso, how I feel or interpret reality- as confusing, rich, imperfect, and beautiful.

To this end, I incorporate symbolic imagery in my work- every person, place, or thing in my paintings has a meaning. Each “unlovable” animal or symbol of death serves as a way to explore the moral weight we unconsciously place on every choice, every person, every object. I want to explore what makes something good or bad, wrong or right. And I’m fascinated with the question: is discomfort a sign that something is actually wrong or just that we haven’t thought deeply enough about it?

I am exploring these questions for myself and my hope is to inspire others to do the same through art that is both aesthetically pleasing and intellectually engaging.
